🐟 5 Fish You Can Catch with Nightcrawlers in Central Texas

One worm, five different fish. Here's our guide to what's biting in Central Texas lakes and creeks — and how to target each species.

One of the coolest things about nightcrawlers as bait is their versatility. The same worm that catches a tiny bluegill can also tempt a 10-pound catfish. Here are the five fish species we catch most around Central Texas — and tips for each.

1. 🐟 Largemouth Bass

Where: Lake Georgetown, Lake Stillhouse, Brushy Creek
Best time: Spring mornings, Fall afternoons
Rigging tip: Texas-rig your nightcrawler through the nose and hook tip barely exposed. Cast near lily pads or fallen logs and let it sink slowly.

💡 Pro Tip: Bass love structure. Find a dock, a submerged log, or a change in depth — that's where the bass are hiding. Drop your nightcrawler right next to it.

2. 🐡 Bluegill

Where: Any Texas lake or pond — they're everywhere
Best time: Year-round, especially summer evenings
Rigging tip: Use a small piece of nightcrawler (just 1 inch) on a size 8 hook with a small bobber. Bluegill have small mouths — don't use the whole worm or you'll miss the bite.

3. 🐠 Channel Catfish

Where: Colorado River, Lake Georgetown deep channels
Best time: Night fishing, especially after rain
Rigging tip: Fish on the bottom with a sinker. Thread the whole nightcrawler onto the hook. Catfish navigate by smell — let the worm sit still and the fish will find it.

4. 🎣 Yellow Perch

Where: Deeper sections of Central Texas lakes
Best time: Winter and early spring
Rigging tip: Fish 10–20 feet deep with a small section of nightcrawler. Perch school up — if you catch one, keep fishing the same spot.

5. 🌊 Common Carp

Where: Slow-moving sections of rivers, lake inlets
Best time: Summer mornings near vegetation
Rigging tip: Use a whole nightcrawler on the bottom near weedy areas. Carp are cautious — use light line and be patient. When you hook one, it fights like crazy!
